Members may be accredited, recommended or invited. Accredited schools will have undergone a thorough examination of their application (courses offered, teaching body, facilities at the students' disposal, success rates in exams, and students' integration in the world of work). Recommended schools are establishments that have acquired a higher level of reputation for a number of years for their teaching and results. They may be accredited if they so wish and then offer the students the chance to study for European degrees. Invited schools meet the abovementioned conditions but are not a part of the European Union.
Candidate schools or institutions must be from a country that is member of the European Union. They must have been teaching at higher education level for at least ten years (unless the board of directors accords a special dispensation). The Diplomas students can study for must be of a level that is higher or equal to two, three, four or five years of higher education, depending on the annual volume of hours spent in class and the work each type of course demands. The degrees prepared must be graded as equivalent as a European Bachelor's degree (180 Ects credits), a European Master's degree (60 or 120 Ects credits depending on the level of integration) or a European Doctorate's degree (180 more Ects credits). The schools must be under supervision of the Ministry for Education or Ministry for Culture in their home country. Their success rates and work opportunities are examined by E.A.B.H.E.S. and must meet precise quality criteria. Success rates are analyzed every three years.
Schools willing to get accreditation must make a request to the board. They need to fill an application form containing the description of the school and the programs and must show a real interest in international exchanges. Upon admission, the school receives a visit from a National representative and is given a pedagogical dossier to complete for each course for which accreditation is requested. Applications are considered six times a year. The Educational Council then suggests candidates for the Board of Directors to vote.
Students having obtained a European Bachelor's degree, a European Master's degree or a European Doctorate and who wish to continue their studies in another school are encouraged to do so thanks to the E.C.T.S. system (European Credit Transfer System). Admission depends on the students' academic results and personal project as well as on their skills in the language used in the target school. Every school having its own admission standards, therefore a candidate can never hope for automatic transfer except when two schools have a bilateral agreement. The candidates receive their yearly Transcript of records regarding the teaching units validated by their school. The school shall make it easier for the students and give them the best possible advice on further study.
